Our Forecast for Chelsea Flower Show 2024

As we eagerly await the 2024 Chelsea Flower Show, anticipation is high for the ground-breaking designs and talent that will be on display. From sustainability to climate resilience and wellness, we predict this year’s event to showcase the transformative power of gardening in tackling contemporary challenges and fostering holistic well-being.

Sustainability

With a concerted effort to reduce environmental impact, garden designers will embrace eco-friendly techniques and low-carbon materials to create gardens that are not only visually stunning, but also environmentally responsible. From green building practices to waste reduction initiatives, sustainability will be at the forefront of the event, proving that great design and sustainability can indeed go hand in hand!

Climate-resilient gardens

In response to the challenges posed by climate change and severe storms and floods that hit the UK last year, we expect to see gardens that are designed to withstand the rigours of these harsh and wet weather conditions. They’ll feature drought-resistant plants, but also firm dry pathways and land drainage systems that cater to the shifting weather patterns and ensure long-term viability. Pathways

Pathways will continue to serve as more than just functional elements. They’ll be essential features that create a sense of flow and connectivity. We believe there will be a variety of materials and styles, ranging from traditional patios and stabilised gravel pathways to more unconventional choices like reclaimed wood and even living pathways crafted from moss or creeping thyme – but curved pathways will remain a popular choice.

Wellness Gardens

As society continues to prioritise health and well-being into 2024, we predict a growing emphasis on gardens designed to promote relaxation, mindfulness and mental wellness. These therapeutic spaces will incorporate elements such as quiet areas, aromatic plants and sensory experiences to create havens of tranquillity amidst the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Gone Wild

We expect to see gardens embrace an allure of wildflowers and native flora. From meadowsweets, alexanders and welsh poppies, there will be a departure from formal landscaping, in favour of a more naturalistic aesthetic. Seeds of lesser-known flowers and so-called 'weeds' like cow parsley and dandelions will also take centre stage, highlighting their importance in supporting biodiversity and pollinator populations.

Although sadly we won’t be attending the Chelsea Flower Show this year, as past RHS flower show exhibitors and garden enthusiasts, we look forward to the unveiling of the stunning displays and innovative designs that reflect the evolving trends and values in gardening.
